Wisdom Teeth Removal: My experience

I was born and brought up in India and I'm 26 yrs old. You might be surprised but dentists in India never recommend to remove your wisdom teeth. Infact if you were to tell people from India that wisdom teeth should be removed they will be rather surprised.

Here in the US, its quite different and its commonly accepted that wisdom teeths must be reomved when you ar 18 or so. Here every dentist you will see, recommends to remove all of your 4 wisdom teeth. Infact insurance companies also support them as they know that later in life there might be more issues because of having them..

A few weeks back, I started having pain at the very back of my mouth. Yeah it was one of my wisdom teeth. After bearing the pain for a few days, I decided to see a dentist. I knew in advance what was going to be suggested to me . " Remove your wisdom teeth" and I was OK about it since about 2 yrs back I was recommended the same for my other wisdom teeth. On that occasion, I didn't remove it, took some pain killers for a few days and it has been OK ever since.

I picked the dentist after a lot of research and told myself to trust her judegement. After doing a panoramic X-ray, she diagnosed that my lower right wisdom teeth was partially under the gum and also a little slanted. She said it needed to be removed. Infact she recommended that both my lower wisdom teeths needed removal and recommeded me to an oral surgeon.

I was in pain and needed something urgently.I didn't have time to researh on the oral surgeon and hoped that the dentist was recommending me to a good one.

The surgeon told me that 3-5 days will be painful. But I had no idea what I was signing up for. After the surgery which lasted about 1 hr, next 2 days were kind of OK. I even went to work . The 3rd day was beginning of me experiencing the most terrible pain I've ever had in my life. I was taking Vicodin ever 4 hrs but pain wouldn't go away. I couldn't sit, couldn't sleep, couldn't do anything. I needed icepack continuously. The minute icepack would melt, I'll again be terrible. The next two days didn't spare me at all. When on 6th day I saw no signs of this pain leaving me, I went to the surgeon..She said it was normal... Normal ??? Huh???

She filled the two extraction locations with something that numbed it and for the first time in about 4 days, I'd some relief. But this was the first time I learnt something new... She told me only 80 percent of pain will go away at the end of 2 weeks....and it would take another 1 weejs for another 10% of pain to go away...and about 1 months for it to be back to normal... I was shocked.....

My expectations were not set to these....Nobody told me I'm signing up for a continuous pain which will last as long as a month....

Before my wisdom teeth removal I couldn't find any relevant info on the web.. I hope people benefit from my expereince. I'll also be happy to answer any questions from my experience.

I am experiencing the same thing! I got my wisdom teeth out on Thursday. Friday I felt fine - thought "what's the big deal??". Saturday afternoon rolled around and I started feeling a lot of pain.

By Sunday it was really bad. I even took T3's - they did nothing for me. No form of medication seemed to help!

Monday morning I called the dentist office and they got me in to check up on me at 10:30, and told me that everything was normal and I was healing well! I didn't know how that was possible, but took his word for it. He said I should feel pain for another week, with each day getting better.

It is now Wednesday and the pain is horrible. Ibuprofin isn't helping. I've been off work too long so I have to come in. I can't sleep at night, and eating worsens the pain. This is horrible! Everyone says the pain should be gone by now, but the dentist says otherwise. If I'm not feeling even the slightest bit better by tomorrow I'm going back to the dentist!

I think the diagnosis is mostly the same for everyone: impacted wisdom teeth have to be removed. It's only different when it comes to the surgery itself and the healing process after. For me, the pain went through the roof as soon as the anesthesia wore off. My family dentist (Atlanta-based) warned me about it, so I took my painkillers and antibiotics religiously.

After the first two days, the pain gradually declined, just like what my dentist described how it would be. The rate may be different for the others, but everything heals all the same. We just have to follow the advice of the experts in dentistry. Atlanta, GA dentists, just like mine, are sure to be trusted.

Hi i just read your post, a day after i went to the dentist for pain in the jaws. The x-ray shows all 4 teeth at the four corners of my mouth! The dentist told me to remove all 4, as i will be travelling abroad and could face more problems. Although initially he suggested that we "wait and watch"!
I better ask him about the pain that most of you experience after removal..! Better be prepared, right?

Hi, I had a wisdom tooth removed when I was 18 as it gave me a lot of trouble. I actually didn't experience much pain. It just used to feel bit weird, as in the space where the tooth was but not pain. I guess, it depends from person to person.

I think most of your experience sucks compared to what happened to me. I live in LA but came to Delhi during vacations and decided to get the wisdom teeth removed since I was in some pain.

Its been a week and there is no more pain for me. Its been a pretty smooth ride.

Maybe you just got it done from a really shitty oral surgeon.
Also, my dentist told me its very common for people to get the wisdom teeth removed nowadays in India and dentists mostly recommend it based on your situation.

Most of your experience is really funny to me. Hope you are ok now..lol

Even around year back I also had sever pain in one of my wisdom tooth..., In Spite of getting the cavity filled up for couple of times , it was not of much help, so dentist had also advised me for its removal...But I did not removed... I took just 1 or 2 pain relief medicine and pain was totally over..And I got the root cannel done...Then after I avoided to eat from that side of my mouth and pain was totally forgotten... Around 6 months back 3/4th of tooth automatically came out without any pain, Now its over one year...1/4 of my wisdom tooth is still with me and Wolla...I have no pain :)

Even my mom, when she was young, had to go through lots of trouble because of wisdom tooth, her nerve was impacted...Pulling out teeth is not a good idea..as it can damage the nerves that are directly connected to the Brain.

If you go out in SUN , level of calcium will increase in your body, that will make your teeth stronger....

Thank man, I too share the same experience. The worst thing was doctor never explained me the after effects of it. I am in my 4 th day after the surgery and the pain has only increased and Dr had only prescribed for painkillers for only 5 days. I wonder how painfull is it going to be once I stop taking painkillers.

Seems like you had what is known as "dry socket". It happens when the blood clot formed at the extraction site dislodges.

It can happen if you smoke, drink stuff trough a straw, cough or sneeze during the first 2-3 days. Anything that puts pressure on the "hole" left by the tooth can cause it.

I had both lower wisdom teeth extracted and had no problems with it, no pain, only minor discomfort.

I'm actually about to have my wisdom tooth extracted by my Chandler Dentist this weekend. This is my second time having a wisdom tooth extracted; my last one was back in 2011 and was also done by my Chandler Dentist. I did experience severe pain and lost a lot of weight because I can't eat properly, I also had to refrain from any tiring activities as it may cause infection on my gums. Anyhow, after a month or so, everything seems to be fine. I just hope that it would be the same this time.

Hi, I'm supposed to have my wisdom teeth out on Wednesday, but I've always wondered if it's really necessary. My friend (born in India) told me no one there has them out, and he thought my dentist's recommendation was really strange. I am curious, is the wisdom teeth thing just a US obsession? And if extraction is rare in India, what do people usually do when theirs start to come in?

Can anybody let me know the cost of surgical extraction of wisdom tooth? The consultant I met i charging me Rs 8000 for the extraction excluding x-ray and fees. Is this on the higher side?

Well, when it comes to oral surgery or wisdom teeth removal, it's really hard for patient to overcome the fear of wisdom teeth pain and be ready for the surgery but here after reading this story one should can be sure about that they just need to have patience and believe on the dentist and that's it.

Cost of wisdom tooth extraction varies from around Rs.5000/- to as high as Rs.10,000/- This is the surgical cost for wisdom tooth removal charged by dentists in delhi. There are different angulations at which wisdom tooth is impacted or entrapped and since ther nerves and vessels are ther ein the vicinity so the surgery to be preformed is very specific and shall be performed by a trained surgeon and shall not take more than 30 mins in 90% of cases. you can email your queries at clinicmatrix@gmail.com

I've been experiencing extreme pain in my lower jaw on the the left side, I tride to give it time expecting it to reduce gradually but it is getting worse.
I decided to see a dentist and he suggested me to remove my wisdom tooth, he explained me the procedure and it has scared the shit out of me.
They'll cut the gums and peel them down then they'll carefully extract the teeth and then stitch up the gums and after a week or so the stitches will be removed.
My surgery is pencilled in at the coming Friday and I'm so nervous & scared that I'm literally feeling sick 😨😨

I didnt exactly have pain but the gums sorrounding the particular wisdom tooth was swollen and had pus, so i went for a check up and the first thing he suggested was removing it. I asked for something temporary but he insisted on the removal. He told me it was just a day's procedure and i would be able to continue my normal routine the next day with zero pain. I still am deciding on whether to do the surgery or not. Any suggestions?

Hello Guys,

I am stuck here. I wish if someone could tell me whether India is the best place for this wisdom tooth extraction or i should stay back in the US to do the same. I am in two minds and have to quickly get it resolved as the pain is getting worse day by day.

Pls assist.

This kind of self treatment is bad , and if tooth extraction was affection your central nervous system . No good dentist would recommend it.
